Brushes or Palette Knives

As an artist who works with brushes and palette knives, people always ask me which of the two I prefer. For centuries, brushes have been the typical tool employed by painters to drive colors across the terrain of varied painting supports like wood panels and canvases. Even the early cave artists who painted to inspire animal hunting and the consequential need for survival created tools similar to brushes. They rendered animals on cave walls with these early brushes. Legendary artists like Leonardo and Picasso also relied a lot on brushes.

However, palette knives and related tools began to make meaningful impact in the early 19th century and has since become an elegant and bold option for painters. Prominent artists like Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and recently Essien Nsikak (one of my mentors) relied heavily on its use. Palette knives allow for the application of heavily-layered paint to create distinct texture and rich effect on painting surface. Hence, I use both brushes and knives as my vehicles to drive my story.

I paint my narratives first with brushes and the outcome is flat. Texture is important in my signature style of ChuCentric art. The tactile character and depth of field can only be guided by the meticulous use of seasoned and well-made palette knives.

So I create my concentric texture as an escalation of pigment value...and voila!
